Ty James of Gonzales thought his Bonus Crossword scratch-off was a $50 winner, until his girlfriend, Brandi Eddy, looked at it and realized he won one of the game's top prizes of $30,000.
"I brought it to a retailer to get my $50 prize, but the terminal said I would need to file a claim at a Lottery office," said James. "That's when Brandi counted the number of words I uncovered and said that I won $30,000!"
James, who said he plans to buy a new truck with his winnings, purchased his winning scratch-off from Pecan Grove Chevron on East Highway 30 in Gonzales.
Bonus Crossword is a $3 scratch-off game that offers players the chance to win up to $30,000. With a total of more than $1.5 million in cash prizes, the game has three remaining top prizes as of Oct. 28.
