Louisiana Lottery Observes National Problem Gambling Awareness Week

While the Louisiana Lottery promotes its responsible play message on all tickets and promotional materials throughout the year, the Lottery will devote special attention to the issue during National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, March 6 - 12.

"We know responsible play is an important issue to our players," said Lottery President Rose Hudson.  "That's why we encourage players to know the signs of problem gambling and get help if they need it."

Problem and pathological gambling can have a detrimental effect on an individual's personal relationships, finances and employment.  Signs include preoccupation with gambling, a need to bet more money more frequently and irritability when attempting to stop gambling.

According to a 2008 study conducted by the Louisiana Compulsive Gambling Committee, problem gamblers accounted for 1.7 percent of the state's population, while pathological gamblers made up 1.4 percent.  Overall, problem gambling rates statewide have remained relatively stable since 2002. 

The Lottery encourages players to play responsibly by incorporating the following tips:

 Play only for fun.
 Consider any money lost as the cost of entertainment.
 Set a dollar/time limit and stick to it.
 Never borrow money to gamble.
 Don't allow gambling to interfere with family, friends or work.
 Never gamble to win back losses.
 Never use gambling as a way to cope with emotional or physical pain.

Every year, the first $500,000 of Lottery revenue transferred to the state treasury is dedicated to help fund problem gambling programs.  The Louisiana Lottery's mission is to generate revenue for the state, while upholding the highest standards of integrity and public trust.  By law, 35 percent of Lottery revenue is transferred to the state every year to help fund K - 12 public education.

The Lottery encourages anyone with a gambling problem to call the state's toll-free helpline at 1-877-770-7867.  More information and resources can be found the "Responsible Play" section of this wesite, which includes a quiz to help players determine whether they or their family or friends may have a gambling problem.  Brochures on playing responsibly are also provided in Lottery play centers located in 2,800 retail locations statewide, and the state's problem gambling helpline is printed on all Lottery tickets and promotional materials.
